Albert Fred “Red” Schoendienst born in Germantown Illinois in 1923 had a 19-year baseball career primarily as a second baseman from 1945-1963 beginning and ending with the St. Louis Cardinals. He then went on to manage the Cardinals at three different intervals for a total of 14 years as well as serving as a coach through 2016; an amazing 71 consecutive seasons as a Major League player coach or manager. Needless to say the Cardinals have retired his number 2 and Schoendienst was chosen among 21 other former players and personnel for induction into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum’s inaugural class of 2014. It seems the kid from Germantown IL some 40 miles down the road was destined to be an All-Time St. Louis Cardinal. Red was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 and is now that hallowed institution’s oldest living member.

The 1946 All-Star Game watch offered here is from the 1st of his 10 All-Star appearances and from the year he won his first World Series Championship. The Lord Elgin watch is still in its original box. The back of the timepiece is engraved: "AL SCHOENDIENST N.L. ALL-STARS 1946." It is in EX condition but is not currently in working order. Schoendienst led off for the National League in the 1946 Mid-summer classic going 0-for-2 but handling both of his chances in the field including a double-play grounder. The American Leaguers won the game 12-0 with hometown favorite Ted Williams providing the highlight by crushing Rip Sewell's famous "Eephus Pitch" for a home run.
