Torches from the 1964 Tokyo Games are among the rarest in the hobby. This charcoal-colored torch was used during the relay for the 1964 Tokyo Summer Games the first Olympiad to take place in Asia. After a relay in Greece the flame was transported by special aircraft to 12 Asian cities on its way to Japan. A relay of 4374 runners then carried the flame throughout the country before arriving in Tokyo. This torch is not complete. It has the black (cast alloy) handle/holder base part but is missing its stainless steel gas cylinder shaft (a replacement can be purchased separately for around $100 USD). The top of the round holder is engraved "XVIII OLYMPIAD TOKYO 1964" with the interlocking Olympic Rings. It has a diameter of 17 cm (less than 7 inches) and the whole handle stands 20 cm (8") tall. The very bottom of the handle is engraved "NIKKEI YANAGI." The base handle/holder remains in EX-MT condition. It comes in its original square cardboard box another rarity that elevates its value significantly.
