One of baseball's most heart-breaking tragedies was the death of Ken Hubbs on Feb. 13, 1964. At just 20 years old, the Chicago Cubs star second baseman won 1962 National League Rookie of the Year honors and became the first rookie ever to win a Gold Glove. A long and prosperous career was ahead of him when the small plane he was piloting crashed near Provo, Utah, shortly before the '64 season.Offered here is a scarce 1962 rookie original photo of young Ken Hubbs in a throwing pose at Wrigley Field before a game. It has to be one of, if not, the finest Hobbs image ever taken, stamped on the back by renowned photographer Don Wingfield. The crystal-clear shot positions Hubbs' full body in uniform perfectly centered within the white borders. Aside from some horizontal scratches towards the bottom and minor edge wear on the upper side, the photo remains in terrific overall shape with fantastic eye appeal. A newspaper caption is stuck to the back and there are a few stamps from the press as well.DATE: 1962GENERATION: First (printed from original negative)PHOTOGRAPHER: Don WingfieldNEWSPAPER: Sun TimesSIZE: 8 x 10CONDITION: NM-MTAUTHENTICATION: PSA/DNA Type 1 Encapulated
