Here is vintage piece of 19th century baseball history an 1888 payment voucher from the National Base Ball Leagues Chicago White Stockings (the original name of the Chicago Cubs until 1889; Chicago White Sox adopted their mascot when they entered the American League in 1900). The White Stockings were one of the most famous clubs of the era and one peppered with Hall of Famers from the owner on down. Club President A.G. Spalding is pictured on the 7 ¾-by-3 ½-inch certificate that is dutifully printed with the ornate delicate styling of the times including three-color printing on the front and a wonderful array of 12 composite images of the club on the back in black-and-green printing a group that includes player/manager Cap Anson and another Hall of Famer outfielder Hugh Duffy. The voucher has some writing on the front including the payment of $19.80. It remains in remarkable condition jostled only by a couple of small tears at the bottom none of which dramatically impact the presentation and could be fairly easily matted out in a framing.
