You may recognize the name “Pelé.” But the former Brazilian soccer superstar’s given name – Edson Arantes do Nascimento – would not be so familiar. In fact he was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison. His parents decided to remove the "i" and simply call him "Edson" but there was a mistake on the birth certificate leading many documents toshow his name as "Edison" not "Edson" as he is called. Though he was born into poverty he managed to turn things around by signing his first professional soccer contract at the age of 15 with the Santos FC. The following year he joined the Brazil National Football Team. During his international career he won three FIFA World Cups (1958 1962 and 1970) being the only player ever to do so and remains the all-time leading goal scorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 91 games.This lot features a Pele signed and inscribed “Edson” 1962 Brazil World Cup replica jersey. The yellow-with-green trim long-sleeved cotton jersey includes a “CBD” embroidered patch over the left chest area as well as Pele’s trademark uniform number “10” in green tackle twill on the back. The acronym CBD stands for the “ConfederaçãoBrasileira de Desportos” (Brazilian Sport Confederation) predecessor of the Brazilian Football Confederation the governing body for soccer in Brazil.
