Payne Stewart was a professional golfer whose life ended suddenly at age 42. The winner of three majors Stewart was still coming down from winning the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina on Sunday June 17 when things took a tragic turn. Four months later on October 25 Stewart was flying in a chartered Learjet from Orlando to Dallas with five others to discuss a new golf course for SMU his alma mater. The plane was cruising on autopilot when it lost cabin pressure. Investigators theorized all on board became incapacitated by lack of oxygen. The plane flew on for almost four hours and 1500 miles before it ran out of fuel and crashed near Mina South Dakota.

This lot includes a pair of Payne Stewart tribute displays. The first piece is a beautifully designed shadowbox that measures 38 wide by 15 high by 3 deep. It includes a signed filmstrip showing Stewart when he hit his tournament-clinching putt on the 72nd hole of the 1999 U.S. Open. Also included as part of the display is an engraved plaque calling the momentous occasion as The Putt Hear Around the World as well as an engraved scorecard showing Stewarts four round totals from the 99 U.S. Open. The last piece of the first display comes in the form of a replica SeeMore putter matching the one that Stewart used during his triumphant run.

The second item is a beautiful display showing Stewart holding the United States Golf Associations Championship Trophy follow his memorable win at Pinehurst No. 2. The overall presentation piece measures 19 wide by 19 high and includes the same style W.W.J.D. (What Would Jesus Do) bracelet Stewart wore during the tournament alongside a specially engraved silver plaque calling out his three majors as well as a special quote that Stewart once uttered: The thing about dreams is sometimes you get to live em out.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
