The Saratoga Sanford Stakes is a thoroughbred horse race at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs New York. A six furlong sprint race the Grade III event is open to two-year-old horses. This lot features a pair of New York Racing Association Sanford Stakes Champion trophies that were awarded in 1985 and 1989 both to horses owned by Eugene V. Klein.
In the 1985 running “Sovereign Don” ridden by Jorge Velasquez won the event with a time of 1:10.60. The ornately designed sterling silver bowl (lion's symbol marked on bottom) that was awarded to Klein measures 5.5 inches tall and 7.5” in diameter and weighs 694 grams. It is engraved on the front with the following text: “THE SANFORD WON BY EUGENE V. KLEIN SARATOGA August 14 1985 Sovereign Don.” In the 1989 event “Bite The Bullet” ridden by Jose A. Santos won the race with a time of 1:09.80. The exquisitely designed sterling silver hallmarked bowl (708g) that was awarded to Klein measures six inches tall by eight inches in diameter and is engraved on the front with the following text: “N.Y.R.A. THE SANFORD WON BY EUGENE V. KLEIN’S BITE THE BULLET SARATOGA August 16 1989.”
