On November 2 1985 as one of three fillies entered by Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas “Twilight Ridge” held off stablemate “Family Style” by a length to give Lukas his initial Breeders’ Cup victory. Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez was aboard Twilight Ridge for his first of two Breeders’ Cup victories. Twilight Ridge’s victory gave owner Eugene V. Klein the first of his five Breeders’ Cup winners. One of four horses bred in Florida to be victorious at the 1985 Breeders’ Cup Championships at Aqueduct Racetrack Twilight Ridge won her first start on June 2 1985 at Belmont Park and four weeks later in her second start won the Astoria Stakes (G3) at Belmont.

This lot features the prized trophy that Twilight Ridge’s owner walked away with that day at the Breeders’ Cup. Standing 8.5” wide by 13.5” tall the trophy includes a large red-and-white marble base that stretches 4.25 inches high and 8.5 inches wide. A sculptured nine-inch tall prancing horse made of solid bronze is featured on top and is called an ecorche which illustrates the muscles of the horse in great detail. The trophy includes a wraparound gold band that has been engraved on both sides with vital information from the event. The front side reads: “EUGENE V. KLEIN’S TWILIGHT RIDGE Cox’s Ridge – Waving Sky by Quibu – WINNER – SECOND RUNNING BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES Aqueduct Racetrack November 2 1985.” The second engraving which appears on the opposite side reads: “TWILIGHT RIDGE Bay Filly – 1983 Bred by Thomas E. Burrow MD Trainer – D. Wayne Lukas Jockey – Jorge Velasquez.”  The trophy weighs just over 17 pounds.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
