Major League Baseball franchises own a kind of checkered history when it comes to doling out big bucks for young talent but the San Diego Padres did pretty well with this $5000 check made out to Osborne Smith way back in July of 1977. A quarter century later Padres officials poked through the archives found the canceled check and promptly entombed it in a 10-by-7-inch acrylic holder and presented it to Ozzie Smith on the very same day that he was inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame. The check is in Ex-Mt condition and of course boasts a handsome "Osborne E. Smith" autograph above the bank cancellation stamping. Etched into the acrylic are the words "A 1977 Padres Bonus Baby" and "Presented July 28 2002." The check rests on a 12-by-3-inch matching acrylic stand all of which is still in essentially as-issued and problem-free condition.
