Bill Russell had won NCAA titles with the University of San Francisco Dons, a U.S.A. Gold with the 1956 basketball team and multiple NBA championships with the Boston Celtics. But somehow had not appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated until this masterful SI release in 1965.
Russell appears thoughtful in this Celtic-green themed cover, rated 7.0 by CGC, their highest graded example of the issue, a Pop of 1!
Rival NBA forward and poet Tom Meschery once described Russell as "an eagle with a beard." That persona is on full display here on this special magazine.
Mr. Russell just passed away in the summer of 2022 at age 88, so interest in any memorabilia linked to him is getting even more attention.
