Circa 1928-30 Washington State letterman sweater belonging to College and Pro Football Hall of Fame center Mel Hein. Perhaps one of the greatest offensive linemen to ever play the game Hein won the first ever NFL MVP award in 1938 and is the only offensive lineman ever to do so. For 15 straight seasons from 1931 through 1945 Hein never missed a down due to injury while playing for the New York Giants. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame Hein was one of the 17 member charter class to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when it opened in 1963. The Sporting News ranked Hein 74th on their 1999 list of 100 greatest football players despite the passing of 55 years since his last game. While at Washington State Hein led his 1930 team to an undefeated season before losing to Alabama in the 1931 Rose Bowl. Beautiful maroon sweater with large "W" sewn on left breast. "Mel Hein" in script sewn in the back of collar. Sweater in great condition however 3 of buttons are missing. Great item of a Collegiate and Professional Hall of Fame member.
