ADDENDUM: Please note that the description of this lot has changed and differs from the printed catalog. This passport bears a renewal stamp that extended its validity from its original expiration date of September 14 1972 through July 18 1977 however its last usage stamps date to April of 1974.

There is no living person on earth who is more well-known than the great Muhammad Ali. A controversial and polarizing figure early in his boxing career the former Heavyweight Champion of the World is now highly regarded for the skills he displayed in the ring plus the values he exemplified outside of it: religious freedom racial justice and the triumph of principle over expedience. In fact he was crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). His professional boxing career began on Oct. 29 1960 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Tommy Hunsaker in Alis hometown of Louisville Kentucky and ended 21 years later on Dec. 11 1981 with a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Canadian Trevor Berbick in Nassau Bahamas. Ali compiled an overall record of 55-6 with 37 knockouts to his credit.

During the course of his competitive career Ali traveled to countless cities states countries and continents. This lot features a very rare piece of Alis personal memorabilia: his official United States of America passport that was issued on July 19 1972. The green 20-page passport was used by Ali from the date of issue through April 1974. Dozens of trips are recorded by visa stamps on the interior pages including trips to Singapore and Malaysia as well as Venezuela and Hong Kong. The official passport includes Alis birth date (Jan. 17 1942) his birthplace (Kentucky U.S.A.) and the color of his hair and eyes (black and brown respectively). Ali has signed the document in two places; the first signature appears in black ink on page 2. His second signature appears in blue ink on page 3 on the left side of his black-and-white passport photo. Originally issued as a replacement passport for a lost/stolen passport it was supposed to expire on Oct. 18 1972. However on Sept. 14 1972 Ali went through the Department of State Passport Agency in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to have this passport extended through July 18 1977. The passport number is Z1582800. Although its 43 years old the passport remains in remarkably good condition. Only the outside spine has deteriorated over time.
