During the latter part of the 1980’s despite an aching back and nagging bone spurs in his heels Larry Bird was still the team leader and driving force behind the success of the Boston Celtics. In 1987-88 in fact he had the best statistical season of his career by averaging 29.9 points 9.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game while shooting his way into the 50-40-90 club for an unprecedented second straight season. A year later he played in just six regular-season games as he underwent back surgery to remove the bone spurs. The following season he bounced back to average 24.3 points per game which just happened to match his overall career average. This lot features a pair of Bird’s game-worn and dual-signed Converse All-Star Weapon sneakers from that overall period of time.

The black-and-white leather shoes show moderate usage but remain in remarkable overall shape. Though neither shoe sports a size tag they appear to be in Bird’s standard size 13. The original shoelaces remain intact and the pair comes very structurally sound inside and out with no signs of deterioration whatsoever. Bird himself has signed both shoes in 7-8/10 black fine-point pen on the upper ankle panels. Converse All-Star Weapons are among the most highly-coveted gamers in the hobby and this pair is a magnificent example from one of the best players to ever lace 'em up.

Provenance: This lot originates from a gentleman who has enjoyed a long and successful career in Hollywood as an agent for many well-known athletes and entertainers. His professional and personal network enabled him to amass a significant collection of memorabilia nearly all of which was given to him directly from the athletes and entertainers themselves. All of these items are being introduced to the marketplace here for the first time. While our consignor remains anonymous SCP Auctions will issue an LOA for each game used item attesting to its player-direct provenance.
