The acclaimed artist Cliff Spohn produced this wonderful original chalk artwork of Mickey Mantle a rare piece of post-retirement portraiture that was uncommon for a legendary athlete so often portrayed in action and in the uniform of his youth and athletic prime years. The likeness of a silver-haired and long-retired Mantle in a sports shirt that might have been suitable for one of his post-playing career fixations golf is absolutely stunning in its simple elegance and clarity. The 16-by-18-inch original chalk artwork is further enhanced by a blazing 9/10 Mickey Mantle blue Sharpie autograph that seemingly matches the overall color scheme and dignified matting and framing. The artwork is also signed (and dated 1990) by the artist the prolific and much imitated Spohn who was one of the early pioneers in the sports art arena. With attractive matting and a 2-inch grey wood frame the overall dimensions rise to 23-by-25 inches as attested to in a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Greer Johnson Mantle's longtime business manager in his years on the hobby circuit.
