The great Mickey Mantle was a small-town Oklahoma 15-year-old in 1947 when he began playing for his first traveling semi-pro baseball team known as the Whiz Kids located in Baxter Springs Kansas. There Mantle was spotted by a scout from the Yankees who was instantly enamored with his immense talent. When Mantle graduated from Commerce High School theYankees signed him to a contract and he rose to superstardom by age 20.
This9.5" by 20" vintage black and white reproduction team photo of the 1947 Whiz Kids has been signed by Mantle with his "No. 7" inscribed in 7/10 black marker. A short blue Sharpie stroke [in unknown hand] underlines that inscription. Mantle is standing in street clothes with the two coaches in the background. A number "7" is lightly marked [in unknown hand] on his white shirt to identify the young buck. The photo has some marks and leftover tape residue but remains EX-MT and can be cleaned off. It is glued to a 1/2cm poster backing. Hard to find a classic piece like this with Mantle's autograph.
