Enameled metal street sign from France named after the most famous and beloved boxer in French history Marcel Cerdan. Cerdan became World Middleweight Champion by knocking out Tony Zale in the 12th round of their fight at Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City New Jersey on September 21 1948. Losing his title a year later in a June 1949 fight against Jake LaMotta in which Cerdan dislocated his shoulder. While training for a rematch with LaMotta Cerdan took an Air France flight to see his lover the famous French singer Edith Piaf who was performing in New York at the time. The Air France plane he took went down in the Azores killing all those aboard. Street sign measures about 19 1/2" by 21". Some chipping to enamel at lower right corner and along left edge. All in all still a great display item.
