1934 was a watershed year for Lou Gehrig. For all of his eleven previous big league seasons he had thrived quietly in Babe Ruth's prodigious shadow. With Ruth's impending retirement at the end of the 1934 season the torch of Yankee greatness was about to become his alone to carry. Gehrig proved he was up to the task by posting a .363 average 49 home runs and 165 RBI - enough to win baseball's Triple Crown. Not surprisingly Gehrig was chosen to anchor the American League lineup in only the second All-Star game ever held. The game was played on July 10 at the New York Polo Grounds. In addition to Gehrig the AL batting line-up featured some of the best hitters in baseball including Ruth Foxx Simmons Dickey and Gehringer.

For Gehrig's participation in the 1934 All-Star Game he received the offered 10k gold charm. Manufactured by Dieges & Clust it measures 3/4 by 7/8 inches and features Gehrig's name engraved on the reverse. It is important to recall that Lou Gehrig famously converted all of his World Series rings and most of his other award charms into a bracelet for his wife making this one of only a few piece of jewelry ever awarded to Gehrig that exists in private hands.
