Football card collecting as we know it began with the 1935 National Chicle set. As the first major gum card issue devoted to pro football, the 36-card set introduced fans to the stars of the young National Football League through vivid illustrations and instructional tips from Boston Redskins coach Eddie Casey.
Card #3 features George Kenneally, captain of the Philadelphia Eagles. A product of St. Bonaventure, Kenneally is described on the reverse as having "won 16 sports letters" and being named "All League End and Captain, 1928." He was a member of the Eagles from the franchise's very first NFL season in 1933. The front depicts Kenneally in a leather helmet and blue-and-white jersey, his hands raised and fingers spread as he prepares to receive a forward pass, with a teammate and a stadium tower set against a bright orange background.
The reverse explains the technique illustrated, noting that the "best method is to catch the football as you would a basketball, with the palms outward and clasping it with the fingers." Casey adds that "ends and backs must become expert in making these basketball catches."
This example shows bright, attractive color with a sharp, well-defined image. The corners and edges show wear consistent with the grade, and a few light areas of wear are visible on the reverse, though the text remains fully legible. An appealing example of a pioneering Eagles captain from the landmark 1935 issue. Graded VG 3 by PSA.
