The 1935 National Chicle Football set is the cornerstone of vintage gridiron collecting, the first major gum issue to showcase the stars of the National Football League. Its 36 cards are prized for their bold Art Deco-inspired designs, and each reverse features playing advice from Eddie Casey, coach of the Boston Redskins.

Card #14 features Phil Sorboe, quarterback of the Chicago Cardinals. The front shows Sorboe in a red #41 jersey with white shoulders, grinning as he carries the ball forward in a crouch, set against a light blue and yellow background. The colors on this card are especially vivid, with the red jersey popping against the pastel backdrop. The reverse is devoted to catching punts, explaining that the task "requires a steady nerve and clear grit" and that "Sorboe of the Chicago Cardinals knows that it is fatal to take his eyes off the ball." Casey also explains a quirk of the rules of the day, noting that "if you fumble no opponent who recovers the ball may run with it."

Biographical details list Sorboe at 5'11" and 172 pounds, from Washington State, with his hometown amusingly misspelled as "Yokima." This example displays strong color and a crisp image. Light to moderate wear is visible at the corners and edges, consistent with the assigned grade, while the reverse is clean with bold blue print. A nice mid-grade example from one of the hobby's most important football issues. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA.
