For 19 seasons (1977-1995) the middle infield of the Detroit Tigers was patrolled by the great duo of shortstop Alan Trammell and second-baseman Lou Whitaker. Both made their MLB debut on the same day: September 9 1977. “Sweet” Lou was named 1978 A.L. Rookie of the Year. Trammell was robbed of the MVP award in 1987. They helped lead the Tigers to a World Series victory in 1984. Trammell was voted MVP of the series. Together they combined for 11 All-Star teams 7 Gold Gloves and 7 Silver Sluggers. Neither was elected to the Hall of Fame but you could certainly make the argument for both.  Offered here is an incredible pairing of game-worn and signed batting helmets from the dynamic duo.

Whitaker’s Tigers helmet is the home version with the white “D” logo on the forehead. It has a right ear flap to protect the switch-hitter when batting from the left side. His white No. “1” decal is affixed to the rear next to the ABC (American Baseball Cap) manufacturer’s logo. The helmet shows solid game use with internal wear and some crumbling of the inner foam padding. Size 7 is posted inside along with the maker’s production date coding which we have decoded to indicate January 1990. Sweet Lou’s gorgeous signature in shiny 10/10 silver marker adorns the outer bill.

The Trammell helmet is the road version with the orange “D” logo on the forehead. It has a left ear flap for the right-handed hitter. His orange No. “3” decal is affixed to the rear next to the ABC logo. The helmet shows solid game use inside and out. Size 7 1/8 is posted inside along with the maker’s production date coding which we are unable to decode. It appears to be the earlier version so we are calling it pre-1990. Trammell’s lovely signature and “4X Gold Glove” inscription adorns the outer bill in shiny 10/10 silver paint pen.
