Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. really knew how to rise to the occasion. That included displaying his sweet swing in each of the 13 MLB All-Star Games for which he was selected. In one of his earlier ASG efforts Griffey not only led his team to victory but took home top honors as the Mid-Summer Classic’s Most Valuable Player. At the 1992 All-Star Game on July 14th at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium the 22-year-old Seattle Mariners center fielder took center stage and delivered. After hitting a run-scoring single in the first Griffey launched a solo moon shot off N.L. pitcher Greg Maddux in the third inning to put the A.L. All-Stars up 5-0. He completed his outstanding day at the plate by ripping a double to right field in the sixth inning to finish 3-for-3 with two RBI. Thanks to Griffey’s hot bat the A.L. squad notched a convincing 13-6 victory.

Offered here is the original Chevrolet 1992 All-Star Game Most Valuable Player trophy that was slated to be awarded to Griffey following the game. But there is an interesting backstory to share behind it. Then-Padres Director of Marketing Tom Ryba was in charge of organizing the festivities of the ’92 All-Star Game including the MVP trophy presentation. An intern apparently signed off on receiving the MVP trophy at Jack Murphy Stadium a few days before the contest but it got misplaced so they had to order a brand new one from the folks at Chevrolet. Griffey received the replacement version following the game but the original one wasn’t located until days after the game in a storage closet at the stadium. As the story goes Ryba was allowed to keep it. The MLB officials responsible for inscribing the MVP into the trophy spent a few days at Petco wrapping up the event and added that special nameplate with Griffey's name for Ryba as kind gesture

The 22-inch trophy is an impressive piece of craftsmanship. Possessing a 13-inch mid-section comprised of clear Lucite it reads “CHEVROLET MOST VALUABLE PLAYER SAN DIEGO PADRES 1992 ALL-STAR GAME.” The nearly 25-pound award possesses a robust black marble base with a face plate holding "KEN GRIFFEY JR." and the A.L. and N.L. logos while the top of the structure includes a secure and official 1992 All-Star Game Baseball complete with Padres blue-and-orange colors serving as the stitching. What’s more the trophy comes packaged inside the original wooden crate in which it was delivered from Chevrolet Motor Division’s Central Office in Warren Mich. to Jack Murphy Stadium some 25 years ago. The crate which is carpeted on the inside measures 11” tall by 15” wide by 25” deep. The ASG Trophy comes wrapped inside a large 1992 San Diego Padres All-Star Game felt banner that would love great displayed on a wall.

Includes LOA from former Padres Director of Marketing Tom Ryba. Images attached of him handing out the replacement trophy that Griffey kept.
