Shortly after defeating Richard Dunn to become the undisputed heavyweight boxing champ, Muhammad Ali fought one of the strangest bouts of his career. Called the “War of the Worlds,” the fight pitted Ali against Japanese professional wrestler Antonio Inoki. The lead-up to the fight saw Ali and Inoki trading trash talk, with the Champ calling his opponent “The Pelican” for his pointed chin and Inoki giving Ali a crutch to use when he was thrown from the ring. Special rules incorporating both boxing and wrestling guidelines were agreed upon before the June 26, 1976, bout. The undercard featured equally odd pairings, including Chuck “The Bayonne Bleeder” Wepner vs. wrestler André the Giant. In the main event, Ali and Inoki fought to a 15-round tie. Much of the fight saw Inoki on his back, kicking at Ali’s legs. In the later rounds, Ali tried to counter the more than 100 kicks with his arms. The crowd in Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan arena, as well as the 1.4 billion who watched remotely, were disappointed in the exhibition. The arena fans threw debris onto the ring and chanted for their money back. Despite the unpopular legacy of this unique bout, the Ali-Inoki fight is seen by some as one of the forerunners of today’s mixed martial arts fights. This Japanese-language poster was used on-site at the Nippon Budokan for the fight. The yellow horizontal poster measures 25 ¼” x 29 ½” and features the images of Muhammad Ali, Antonio Inoki, and the other fighters on the card that evening. Ali has signed this rare poster twice, once with just his name and a second time with the date “6-4-’89.” A rarely encountered on-site poster from Muhammad Ali’s oddest fight. The poster comes with an LOA from PSA/DNA for the signatures.
