Capturing Gehrig alone in an intensely personal moment, this is arguably the most emotional image from one of the most famous speeches in American history! It stands apart as the defining portrait and what some may view as simply the finest image produced that day. While countless photographs survive from Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day showing Gehrig surrounded by teammates, dignitaries, and photographers, intimate portrait images from the ceremony are remarkably scarce. This original Associated Press photograph is one of only a handful of known solo portraits taken during the historic July 4, 1939.

On July 4, 1939, just weeks after his ALS diagnosis had ended his legendary streak of 2,130 consecutive games, Gehrig addressed a packed Yankee Stadium on Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day and delivered what would become one of the most celebrated speeches in American history, declaring himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." Renowned Associated Press photographer Murray Becker was there to document the occasion, freezing the unforgettable instant in which Gehrig lowers his head and wipes away tears as his composure briefly gives way. The resulting photograph has become one of the most powerful visual records of Gehrig's final public appearance in uniform.

Becker is widely regarded as one of the premier photojournalists of his. His portfolio includes some of baseball's most enduring imagery, including the famous photograph of Lou Gehrig photographing Babe Ruth and the celebrated image of Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Lou Gehrig leaning against the railing at Philadelphia's Shibe Park (later renamed Connie Mack Stadium). His ability to capture defining moments with both technical precision and emotional depth is fully evident in this extraordinary portrait.

The reverse retains its original period Associated Press Wirephoto stamp along with the handwritten editorial notation, "3 col sports early," documenting the print's preparation for same-day newspaper publication. Preserved in exceptional Near Mint condition with remarkable clarity and contrast, the 9.25” by 7” photograph has been authenticated by PSA/DNA as a Type I original.
