Julius Boros was a Hungarian-American professional golfer noted for his easy swing and strong record on difficult golf courses particularly at the U.S. Open. A native of Fairfield Connecticut he did not turn pro until 1949 when he was already 29 years old. Boros won 18 PGA Tour events including three majors: the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. This lot features one of his tournament-used 7 irons which Boros used while competing in and winning the 1968 PGA Championship. The 37 Wilson Dyna-Powered Staff Model 7 iron (#SDP1687) shows plenty of use and the leather-wrapped grip shows both wear and fading where Boros interlocked his fingers. In a signed typed letter on his personalized letterhead that accompanied the donation dated Dec. 13 1977 Boros wrote: Happy to contribute a 7 iron to the Boys Club of Royal Oak to round out your set. I used this club for a number of years winning the 1968 United States Open and Westchester Classic. Upon further review Boros actually won the PGA Championship in 68 not the U.S. Open so he mistakenly identified the wrong major in his letter. However less than a month after winning the PGA Championship he did in fact win the 68 Westchester Classic with a one-stroke victory over three runners-up: Bob Murphy Jack Nicklaus and Dan Sikes. Boros suffered a fatal heart attack in 1994 at age 74 on the golf course at the Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale Florida. He was found sitting in a golf cart under a willow tree by two club members near the 16th hole his favorite spot on the course.

Includes original signed letter that Boros sent to the Boys' Club of Royal Oak as well as a signed black-and-white 8" x 10" photo showing a fashionable Boros hitting a drive. He signed the photo in green ink and inscribed it: Boys Club of Royal Oak. Sincere Best Wishes.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
