On February 15 2004 the Texas Rangers traded slugger Alex Rodriguez to the New York Yankees for second baseman Alfonso Soriano and a player to be named later (Joaqu’n ’rias was eventually sent to the Rangers on March 24). The Rangers also agreed to pay $67 million of the $179 million left on Rodriguez's mega contract. Rodriguez in turn agreed to switch positions from shortstop to third base paving the way for the trade because the vastly popular Yankees Team Captain Derek Jeter was already entrenched at shortstop. Rodriguez also had to switch uniform numbers going from 3 to 13. Though he had worn No. 3 his entire career that number had already been retired by the Yankees in honor of team icon Babe Ruth.
This lot features a limited edition (# 1/27) triple-signed photo-to-art-on-canvas print showing Rodriguez flanked by then-Yankees Manager Joe Torre left and the now retired Jeter at his official signing press conference in February 2004. The oversized and framed (33 wide x 25 high) print has been signed by all three parties in slightly faded blue marker. The event captured Rodriguez donning his Yankee jersey pinstripes for the very first time.
