The THEODORE ROOSEVELT AWARD, or the “Teddy” as it is affectionately known, is the highest award conferred by the NCAA. The Teddy is awarded to varsity athletes who ultimately became a distinguished citizen, exemplifying the ideals to which college athletics dedicated. The award dates to 1967 and Jesse Owens was only the eighth recipient of the honor. This impressive award features a clock with an engraved NCAA logo mounted on a wooded plaque that is in turn mounted on a black marble base. A brass plaque with a bust of the award’s namesake is mounted to the base, engraved with Owens’ name and the date “JANUARY 8, 1974.” This award measures 11¼ x 5 x 13½ inches and weighs over 18 pounds. The clock is not in working order, but perhaps all it needs is a new battery. The fabric cushioning underneath the marble base is intact but heavily worn. Overall, the Teddy remains in outstanding condition with some toning from age and light scuffing to the surface. It was proudly displayed within the Owens family for over four decades.
