Although Jesse Owens was born in Alabama, he was brought up in Cleveland, Ohio. In fact, he owes his first name “Jesse” to the Forest City: when his first teacher asked the young boy his name, Owens replied “J.C,” the initials of his given name “James Cleveland.” The teacher, misunderstanding his strong Alabama accent, called him “Jesse,” the name he’d go by for the rest of his life. In 1967, Cleveland elected its first African-American major, Carl B. Stokes. It was his pleasure to welcome home Cleveland’s most famous son and award him this Key to the City.

The golden key measures 5 1/2 inches (4.4 oz.) and has the "Corporate Seal of the City of Cleveland" on one side, with the other engraved “PRESENTED BY CARL B. STOKES MAYOR, CITY OF CLEVELAND, OHIO 1970-1971.” Maker "COLE NATIONAL CORP" is engraved near the teeth. Overall it shows some abrasions and toning to the surface from age and display and the teeth are slightly warped. A unique tribute to Jesse Owens from the city he grew up in.

Includes LOA signed by each of Jesse Owens' three daughters.
