The San Pasqual Handicap is an annual thoroughbred race for horses age fourand up that has been held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia Calif. since 1935.The 8.5 furlongs (1 and 1/16 mile) dirt race now carries a purse of $200000and is traditionally run in January. In 1989 “On The Line” owned by Eugene V.Klein and ridden by jockey Gary Stevens won the event in 1:41:0. This lotfeatures the winner’s trophy that One The Line’s team walked away with thatday.
Standing 11.25 inches high the two-handled gold-washed sterling silver trophyrests on top of a dark green marble base that boasts an engraved gold plaque onthe front that reads: “January 29 1989 One Mile & One-Sixteenth Won ByON THE LINE Eugene V. Klein Owner D. Wayne Lukas Trainer Gary StevensJockey Time: 1:41:0.” The front of the two-handled trophy is engraved with “SANPASQUAL HANDICAP” positioned on top of the engraved Santa Anita Park logo. Theentire trophy including the base weighs 12.6 pounds; the sterling silver cupalone weighs 1048 grams. Light tarnishing is evident inside the trophy cup andthe engraved plaque. The bottom is hallmarked "Sterling" by"Kirk Stieff."
