Directly from the family estate collection of Barney Stein comes this important, never-before-seen 8" by 10" original photograph of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese touching fists after Jackie drove in Reese with his first home run of the 1954 season. Ironically, this occurred on April 15 which would later be memorialized as 'Jackie Robinson Day' across Major League Baseball.
We stress the significance of this rare image because there is no photo or video footage of Pee Wee ever putting his arm around Jackie in the infield during a game to console him as the crowd yelled racial taunts. This alleged scene was portrayed in the Hollywood's biopic 42 starring Chadwick Boseman, yet most historians say it never happened. Well, thanks to the great Barney Stein, we have visual evidence that a touching fist bump between the two teammates did actually happen.
On the reverse of the photo is a printed caption reading, "From Barney Stein: Here's an action shot one will seldom see in baseball as Jackie Robinson and Captain Pee Wee Reese hold hands after crossing the plate on Jackie Robinson's homer. Dodgers' bat boy [Charlie] DiGiovanna walks behind them as he carries Jackie's bat." Sports Illustrated mentions this moment in a 4/15/2015 article: https://www.si.com/mlb/2015/04/15/classic-photos-jackie-robinson#gid=ci0255841200022580&pid=1925-jackie-robinson-childhoodjpg
This timely, crystal-clear black and white original photo was printed off its original negative from the famous Dodgers photographer's camera many years later. The fiber-based gelatin silver print is immaculately preserved and has been professionally matted and framed. This exact framed photo was on display as part of the Barney Stein Photo Collection in 2001 at the Frick Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.
