Featured here is an race-worn silk from Steve Brooks one of the finest American jockeys in thoroughbred racing history. Beginning in in the mid 1940's Brooks rode several famous horses at prestigious Calumet Farm in Lexington KY and raced many to victory at Arlington Park outside of Chicago. He won six races in a single day at Churchill Downs in 1948 before becoming the 1949 Champion Jockey by total earnings and runner-up in total wins. In 1950 he set a world record for the mile aboard the 1948 Triple Crown champion Citation in winning the Golden Gate Mile at Golden Gate Fields. He also rode Citation to victory in the 1951 Hollywood Gold Cup a win that made Citation the first horse in history to earn more than $1 million. Brooks wore this silk for Citation's memorable 1951 victory at Hollywood Park in what would turn out to be the stallion's final race before retiring from competition and going to stud.
The orange silk shows enormous usage but remains with all elements intact including original buttons. The shirt has black stripes on each sleeve and a black collar. "Calumet S. Brooks" is handwritten at the back of the collar which also has a loop attached. 1951 Hollywood Gold Cup photos attached (and accompanying video) showing Brooks aboard Citation appear to be matches for this silk.
Comes with a Letter of Provenance from the Helms/LA 84 Collection.
