This photo taken by Brooklyn Dodgers official photographer Barney Stein commemorates the signing of Brooklyn native Sandy Koufax to his hometown team. Taken in December of 1954, Koufax is wearing a Dodgers cap and jersey, with Al Campanis, the scout who signed him, and Dodgers vice president and head of scouting Fresco Thompson. The Dodgers paid a bonus of $14,000 to sign Koufax who had just completed a successful season on the mound for the University of Cincinnati. The large bonus meant that Koufax went directly to the major leagues without any minor league seasoning. This cost Koufax several seasons of trying to get the hang of pitching in the majors, but when he eventually did, he developed into the greatest in Dodgers history.
The front of this Type 1 photo shows overall toning from age and white paint has been used to crop out the area around Campanis’ upper torso. The back of the photo has Dodgers photographer Barney Stein’s credit stamp along with hand written notations describing the occasion and various Sporting News catalog stickers. There are various staining and toning from age and use present. A great image from the very start of Sandy Koufax’s Hall of Fame career. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
