This Type 1 photo documents the SS Ancon as it becomes the first ship to navigate the newly completed Panama Canal. When the canal opened on August 15, 1914, it was proclaimed the world’s greatest engineering marvel and the crowning achievement for the United States. The canal linked the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, cutting travel time and revolutionizing world trade. This photo captures the immensity of the undertaking as well as the Ancon’s passengers crowding the rail to take in the historic event. For such a momentous occasion, few Type 1 photographs survive, with this one being among the finest. The photo has been printed to its edges with the caption printed along the bottom edge. The photograph measures 9.25” x 7.25” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
