The late Henry Russell "Red" Sanders was a college football player and coach. He was head coach at Vanderbilt University (1940-1942 1946-1948) and UCLA (1949-1957) and compiled a career college football record of 102-41-3 (.709 winning percentage). Sanders' 1954 UCLA team was named National Champions by the Coaches' Poll and the Football Writers Association of America. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1996. Known for being hard driving Sanders used the single-wing formation at Vanderbilt and UCLA and is widely credited with coining the phrase "Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing.” When asked about the UCLA-USC rivalry Sanders once said: "it's not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that!"
Presented here is a sepia toned large format photo from the College Football Hall of Famer. He signed his name “Henry R. Red Sanders” with a vintage fountain pen and personalized it to “Shorty” who evidently was someone involved with the Vanderbilt football program. Framed and ready for hanging on someone’s wall it measures 13.5” by 17.5” and shows visible wear with mild toning and some damage along the upper edge.
