Fred Cox was a Pro Bowl kicker in the NFL from 1963 to ‘77 for the Minnesota Vikings. He is the Vikings all-time leader in scoring (1365 points) and field goals (282) and is one of 11 Vikings to play in all four of the team’s Super Bowl battles from the 1970s. He led the NFL in scoring in 1969 with 121 points and again in 1970 with 125 and was named First Team All-Pro both seasons. He was also named NFC First Team All-Pro in 1971 with 91 points scored. In 1970 he played as the NFC’s team kicker in the Pro Bowl game. Cox was also the Vikings' punter during his rookie season when he averaged 38.7 yards per kick on 70 attempts. Beyond his scoring exploits he may be best known for being the inventor of the NERF football.
Presented here is Fred Cox's 1961 East-West Shrine Game worn jersey. The annual college All-Star football contest was traditionally played in the San Francisco Bay Area until around 12 years ago. Cox who played college ball for the Univ. of Pittsburgh Panthers was drafted in 1961 by both NFL and AFL teams so he most likely wore this jersey in the December 31 1960 game played at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. Cox's team the East won by a score of 7-0 meaning he was presumably much more active punting than kicking that day.
The vintage durene long-sleeve jersey comes in red with white No. "28" tackle twill numbers front and back. The long sleeves have a white striping pattern. Wilson tagging on the front left tail indicates Size 46. Cox has signed the front '2' in 8/10 black marker. Aside from two small holes on the right sleeve the shirt comes in remarkable all-original condition. It shows light soiling puckering a few contact marks and other signs of wear but remains a wonderful example of early gridiron garments.
Includes LOA signed by Fred Cox.
