Here is a super artifact from a legendary ballgame in the 1970s the so-called Pine Tar Game that took place on July 24 1983 at Yankee Stadium. With his team trailing 43 in the top half of the ninth inning with two outs George Brett of the Royals hit a 2-run home run to give his team the lead. However Yankees manager Billy Martin who had noticed a large amount of pine tar on Brett's bat requested that the umpires inspect his bat. The umpires ruled that the amount of pine tar on the bat exceeded the amount allowed by rule nullified Brett's home run and called him out. For fans from several generations the image of a berserk George Brett charging at the umpires is as iconic a moment as the modern game has to offer. As Brett was the third out in the ninth inning with the home team in the lead the game ostensibly ended with a Yankees win. But the Royals protested the game and American League president Lee MacPhail upheld their protest and ordered that the game be restarted from the point of Brett's home run. The game was restarted on August 18 and officially ended with the Royals winning 54. This ball boasts all of that history plus a pair of signatures: Brett himself in blue ballpoint on the sweet spot and his teammate Pat Sheridan who had made the second out of that fateful inning on a side panel complete with his inscription Foul ball that I hit vs. the Yankees 7-24-83 Pine Tar Game. The ball is the appropriate Official American League Lee MacPhail and shows ample game use but is in otherwise problem-free condition. This is a superb piece from one of the more memorable games of the decade.
