Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the first United States president to utilize the radio airwaves to bring his message to the masses. During the dire years of the Great Depression and the frightening lead-up to World War II, FDR’s informal evening broadcasts, dubbed “fireside chats,” helped calm Americans’ fears and allowed him to explain his policies directly to the people. This inspiring 1938 photo depicts Roosevelt delivering one of his fireside chats. The president is poised behind the microphones of the five big radio networks that would bring his calming voice to millions of American homes. The Type 1 photo has wide white borders. The image has a warm patina and sharp detail. The reverse of the photo has the International News Photos credit stamp and the original paper caption slug affixed. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
