Nice grouping of five French Olympic Participation medals including one from the 1924 Paris Summer Games, three from the 1968 Grenoble Winter Games, and one from the 1992 Albertville Winter Games.
1924 Paris Summer Participation Medal. Made of bronze. Minted by Paris Mint. Designed by Raoul Bénard. 55 mm in diameter; 4 mm thick; 76 grams. Obverse has a city view of Paris over French legend in three lines with "VIII OLYMPIADE PARIS 1924" in raised lettering. Reverse shows Nike, Goddess of Victory, with laurel wreaths crowning victorious athletes. Designer's name stamped near bottom rim. Presents in EX condition with some dark tarnishing around the edge and rim. Case not included.
1968 Grenoble Winter Participation Medals (3): Made of bronze and designed by J.M. Coeffin. Diameter 68 mm. Weight 162 grams. Obverse features high relief Greek style head of an athlete with elaborate snowflakes in background; designer hallmarked at bottom. Reverse has Grenoble, France, cityscape surrounded by text "Xes Jeux Olympiques D'Hiver" and "Grenoble 1968". South edge hallmarked "Bronze" and year struck (two "1967" and one "1968"). One of the largest participation medals ever made at that point in time. Condition range is NM to Mint. One includes original brown presentation case.
1992 Albertville Winter Participation Medals. Made of chrome-plated steel. 68 mm in diameter. Weighs 198 grams. Designed by Renee Mayott and struck by the official French Mint, Monnaie de Paris. The front depicts the '92 Albertville Games legend encircled with French and English text, "XVI Olympic Winter Games 8-23 February 92, XVI Jeux Olympiques D'hiver 8-23 Fevrier 92". Reverse depicts a star hanging over the Alps and Olympic rings, encircled with the Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Fortius, Albertville 92." Chrome surface is super clean on the reverse, but the obverse side exhibits significant green discoloration (likely from resting on internal foam padding for so many years in less-than-ideal temperatures). Comes with its original purple presentation case.
