The moguls who engineer the latest versions of reality TV shows could thank one Donald Trump for understanding the nuance of event promotion long before anybody wanted to tune in to New Jersey Housewives. In 1992 that meant a "Clash of the Legends" one-on-one basketball game between two of the greatest stars in NBA history Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Julius "Dr. J" Erving both having recently retired from the NBA with more all-time records tucked under their arms than you can shake a stick at. Jabbar leaped out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in downing Dr. J by a 41-23 score in the battle in front of several thousand fans in the Mark G. Etess Arena at Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Jabbar buoyed by a surprise courtside appearance by his friend Magic Johnson showed he hadn't lost much off the skills that made him the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 38387 points.Referee Earl Strom fed the ball to Johnson twice at timeouts and Johnson did venture on to the court at one point missing a layup. Proceeds from the telecast were donated to Am FAR (The American Foundation for AIDS Research) as well as the Magic Johnson Foundation. The preliminary final between George "Ice" Gervin and Rick Barry was much closer. It went down to the final seconds before Gervin pulled out a 29-26 victory. Barry and Archibald had no trouble winning their preliminary round contests. The 47-year-old Barry blitzed Connie Hawkins with six 3-pointers en route to a 29-17 win. Gervin meanwhile raced out to a 13-0 lead and had no trouble in dispatching Nate "Tiny" Archibald 35-14.

This intriguing lot features Dr. J's shoes from the event game worn and with bold black Sharpie Erving autographs on the inside of each heel plus his "Dr. J" inscription and - on the right shoe only - the "2-28-92" date of the clash. The Converse shoes are white leather with red accents and highlights all laces intact and the Official Converse tagging on the inside of each tongue. The shoes show good game use but are problem free and essentially as issued.

The official souvenir program from that Feb. 28 1992 event an 8 1/2-by-11-inch color cover with the two Hall of Famers on the cover in suitably confrontational poses. Both have signed the 24-page program in black Sharpie above their respective photos. The program features the typical preview information including advertising photos bios and career statistics for all of the participants with all 22 interior pages in black and white. The souvenir program is in Ex-Mt condition without any significant condition issues; the included ticket stub has been torn in fairly typical fashion and is otherwise excellent.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from The Newport Sports Museum.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
