Shaquille O'Neal burst upon the NBA scene in 1992-93 with cartoonish size strength and speed bullying veteran big man as if THEY were the wide-eyed rookies. The number one overall pick in the ’92 draft Shaq put up insane numbers as a rookie for the Orlando Magic easily taking home ROY honors. O’Neal earned 15 All-Star appearances over his sensational career but it wasn’t until he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 and joined forces with a teenaged Kobe Bryant and later coach Phil Jackson that he found that championship magic. In 1999-2000 the Lakers rolled through the regular season with winning streaks of 11 16 and 19 en route to a 67–15 record tied for the fifth best ever. They went on to defeat the Pacers in the NBA Finals for Shaq and Kobe’s first rings and Phil’s first without MJ. But the year belonged to “Diesel” as he averaged 29.7 points 13.6 rebounds and three blocks per game cleaning up every single major NBA player award possible: Scoring Champ League MVP All-Star MVP and Finals MVP. No other player in NBA history has done all that in one season.
Presented here is an amazing piece from Shaq’s historic 1999-2000 season: the very shoes he wore during the 2000 All-Star Game when he took home Co-MVP honors with Tim Duncan the fellow big man known as “Big Fundamental” thanks to O’Neal. To call these massive size 22 sneakers rare would be doing them a disservice. Shaq the longtime entrepreneur who by then had started his own shoe and apparel company Dunk.net had this special pair custom-made with only one prototype; it was specifically designed to wear at the February 13 2000 All-Star game in Oakland. How do we know it’s a true 1 of 1? Well one of Shaq’s Dunk.net employees at the time who handled most of the marketing and PR for the company collaborated with the shoe designer and Shaq on the design blueprints. The employee has proved a detailed LOA attesting to the fact that Dunk.net never made another pair and Shaq only wore them in the 2000 All-Star game. Photo research confirms this.
The mid-top Dunk.Net prototype sneakers come in black with an artistic purple to yellow fade on the synthetic uppers to depict Lakers team colors. The interior tagging indicates his monster size 22. “DUNK” is stamped in the tongues and “DUNK.NET” appears on the outsoles. The rear heel has a unique rubber circle with colorful symbols including a blue peace sign a yellow lightning bolt an orange dot (?) and a red heart. Only “The Big Aristotle” can tell you what each of those mean. The original black laces and insoles are present the latter showing signs of sweat from Shaq’s monster feet. The shoes display solid game wear overall coming essentially as-issued and problem-free. He has signed the outside ankle of each shoe (dark blue on left; silver on right) in 6-7/10 marker with his No. "34" inscribed.
Upon being named All-Star Co-MVP Shaq playfully swiped the shared trophy from Duncan’s and said "You already have one of those rings (referring to Tim’s title from the previous season) so I'm taking the trophy." Four months later Shaq would add his first of four championship rings. A month from now he’ll add that coveted Naismith Hall of Fame ring to his gargantuan fingers when he is inducted in Springfield Mass as part of this year’s class. Rare opportunity to own perhaps the most coveted and exclusive Shaq game worn shoes ever to hit the auction block!
Includes LOA from former Dunk.net employee. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autographs).
