Gifted running back Ernie Davis played for Coach Ben Schwartzwalder at Syracuse University from 1959 to 1961 and went on to national fame in each of those three seasons twice winning first-team All-America honors and capturing the Heisman Memorial Trophy following his senior season. As a sophomore he led the 1959 Orangemen to a national championship capping an 110 season with a 2314 win over the Texas Longhorns in the 1960 Cotton Bowl Classic where Davis was named Most Valuable Player. In his junior year he set a record of 7.8 yards per carry and was the third-leading rusher in the country with 877 yards having rushed for 100 yards in six of nine games. The 1960 Orangemen finished with a record of 72 and did not play in a post-season bowl game. In Ernie's senior year the 1961 Orangemen finished with a record of 83 closing the season with a 1514 victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the Liberty Bowl played at Philadelphia's Franklin Field. Davis became the first black athlete to be awarded the Heisman Trophy and he also won the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy following his 1961 senior season.

Though drafted with the overall No. 1 pick by the Washington Redskins in the 1962 NFL Draft and immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns Davis never played in a professional game. He was diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 1962 and died less than year later on May 18 1963. He was just 23 years old.

This lot features a Ernie Davis autographed 1961 Heisman Trophy Award program entitled 27th Annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Award. It was a program from the evening when he accepted footballs highest individual honor on Wednesday Dec. 6 1961 at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City. Beautifully framed and matted to show both sides of the program from either side of the frame the overall presentation which measures 19 wide by 16 high includes a blue-and-orange tassel that was part of the original program. On the front side of the frame which shows a full page bio and photograph of Davis wearing his Syracuse University uniform you can see where Davis signed the photo page of the program in pencil. The accompanying personalization and inscription in blue ink To Rich Best Wishes was added at a later date and is not in Daviss hand. A very unique and classy piece commemorating one of footballs most promising talents who was cut down in his prime.
