The 1963 NFL Championship Game was played on December 29 at Chicagos Wrigley Field. The battle pitted the visiting New York Giants (11-3) against the hometown Bears (11-1-2) and the game-time temperature was a bone-chilling 10 degrees. The Giants opened the scoring in the first quarter when QB Y.A. Tittle capped off a 41-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Frank Gifford. Chicago answered the call with a two-yard quarterback sneak by Bears QB Billy Wade. Chicagos touchdown was set up by a 61-yard interception return by Bears linebacker Larry Morris. Though the Giants took the lead back in the second quarter with a 13-yard field goal the stage was set for a bruising afternoon. After all the Bears known for their defensive prowess were nicknamed the Monsters of the Midway. Led by defensive coordinator George Allen the Bears defense yielded just 144 points through 14 games (10.2 per game). A second interception by the Bears swarming defense set up another short touchdown plunge by Wade in the third quarter to make the score 14-10. That score would hold up for the remainder of the game as another Bears interception this time by Richie Petitbone in the end zone iced the win with 10 seconds remaining. It was Tittles fifth INT on the day. Presentation ball was given to Allen at a later date by virtue of his defenses spectacular play. Inscribed white Wilson NFL football reads: Worlds Championship Bears 14 Giants 10 December 29 1963 Game Ball George Allen 5 Interceptions 1 Fumble.
