Longtime ace Dave Stewart shined when it mattered most: October. A 20-game winner four straight years for his hometown Oakland A’s (1987-90), “Smoke” started the ’89 All-Star Game for the American League and later that year was named MVP of the 1989 Fall Classic (Bay Bridge Series). The three-time World Series champ got his final ring with the Toronto Blue Jays in ’93, retiring with 168 career victories along with 10 playoff wins and an impressive 2.77 postseason ERA.
In Stewart’s seventh and final season with the A’s, he found himself on the losing end of the 1992 ALCS against the Blue Jays. Ironically, he would leave Oakland for Toronto in free agency a few months later and help the Jays repeat as World Champions. “Stew” won both of his starts in the ALCS against the ChiSox to claim his second career ALCS MVP award. He started Game Two and the deciding Game Six of the 1993 Fall Classic, which ended in dramatic fashion on Joe Carter’s walk-off, three-run homer off Philly closer Mitch Williams. It remains just the second walk-off home run to ever clinch a World Series (besides Mazeroski in 1960).
For his monumental contributions north of the border, Stew was awarded this lovely 1993 World Championship ring made of 14-karat gold by Tiffany & Co. The face has an enameled Blue Jay logo with one large diamond for the eye and two enameled maple leafs honoring Toronto’s back-to-back titles (first team to do so since the 1977-78 Yankees). These are set atop a bed of 45 smaller diamonds surrounded by “1993 WORLD CHAMPIONS”. One shank has “TORONTO BLUE JAYS” above the 1993 World Series logo, with “BACK TO BACK 92-93” down below. The other shank has “STEWART” and his No. “34” above the American League logo. The interior band is engraved “Tiffany & Co. 14K 585”. The ring comes in size 12.5 and weighs 39 grams. It shows moderate wear and presents in very fine shape. ’93 Blue Jays championship rings are highly coveted by collectors, especially Canadians. This is the fourth example (second player’s) we’ve represented at auction and, by far, the most significant.
Includes LOA signed by Dave Stewart (printed in B&W and signed in black pen).
