In the 1930s college footballs All-America teams were comprised of players who were selected as All-Americans by various organizations and writers that chose them. The 10 selectors recognized by the NCAA as "official" at that time were Collier's Weekly as selected by Grantland Rice the Associated Press the United Press the All-America Board the International News Service Liberty magazine the Newspaper Enterprise Association Newsweek the North American Newspaper Alliance and the Sporting News. In addition in 1932 the coveted All America Captains Cup trophy was unveiled honoring college footballs most outstanding All-Americans.

The stunning two-handled silver-plated metal trophy which stands 17 tall was donated by era sports agent Christy Walsh who also served as chairman of the All-American Board of Football at that time. The award recognizes the best of the best the most notable All-Americans from each season from 1932 to 1950. The elegant trophy is engraved with the names of 19 gridiron standouts who stood out from all the rest. The lineup features seven Heisman Trophy winners as well including John Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago who was named the winner of the All American Captains Cup in 1934 the year prior to being chosen as the recipient of the inaugural Heisman Trophy award. Other Heisman Trophy winners whose names appear on the All America Captains Cup include: Nile Kinnick Iowa 1939; Tom Harmon Michigan 1940; Bruce Smith Minnesota 1941; Les Horvath Ohio State 1944; Felix Doc Blanchard Army 1945; and John Lujack Notre Dame 1947. The elegant trophy which boasts an embossed and engraved decorative pattern near the top weighs four-and-a-half pounds.
