Of all the companies that produced advertising displays during the 1930s, none are as desirable as the difficult to find die cut Schrafft’s pieces. Schrafft’s, a Boston candy, chocolate, and cake company, produced no less than 10 different display pieces, each depicting a different player representing his position on the diamond. Though they do not overtly say so, the red and white uniform design of 9 of the 10 players evoke the Red Sox uniform of the period, not surprising since the company was based in Boston. These attractively illustrated figures range from 10” to 16” tall, depending on the pose of the player. Because of their size and delicate die cut, not many of these pieces survived, let alone in a complete 10-piece set as offered here – in fact, this is likely the only complete set in existence. Each figure retains its easel back, allowing them to be displayed as standing pieces. There is some very light toning from age but no fading of the colors and only minor edge wear on small portions of the pieces. The pieces overall present in strong excellent condition. All of the figures remain intact, not showing the age expected from a 90-year-old set of die cut stand-ups with the minor exception of the left fielder’s outstretched arm, which has been torn and could be easily restored. However, there is no evidence of restoration and none needed for the other nine pieces. The colors remain clear and bright. The left fielder figure’s outstretched arm has been torn, though a skilled restorer should be able to restore it to the outstanding condition of the other nine in the set.
