Featured here is an unused torch like those that carried the Olympic flame from Greece to the United States for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. The torch relay tradition began in 1928 in which a spark from the parent flame in Olympia Greece is transported to the host city in time for the opening ceremonies. Upon its arrival in Los Angeles the flame was relayed all the way to Atlanta Georgia for the XXVI Olympiad. The torch was designed by Greek-American Peter Mastrogiannis of Malcolm Greer Designers and its logistics were developed by a six-member team. Its 22 reeds symbolize the 22 games held in the modern Olympics since 1896. A gold band is engraved with the Atlanta Summer Games logo and the quilt of leaves design. The unique specifications of this piece require it to keep a 12 inch flame from extinguishing even in the face of 30 mph winds and rain. To that end the engineering includes a dual-burner system with a blue flame that replenishes the yellow flame. The torch is made of aluminum with Georgia pecan wood in the center. It measures 31.5 inches (80 cm) in height and comes with a Plexiglas display case. This torch comes from the personal collection of Hall of Fame basketball coach Chuck Daly who led the original Dream Team to the gold medal in 1992 and was succeeded as U.S. Men's Basketball coach in 1996 by his top '92 assistant Lenny Wilkens. He was part of the U.S. Men's Basketball committee for both the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympic Gamesand was presented this torch as a gift from the committee. It comes in pristine condition essentially Mint.

Includes copy of LOA from Terry Daly Chuck's widow. Also comes with Letter of Provenance from Rich Behar owner of SportsCard Central who acquired many items directly from the Daly estate in 2010.
