Throwing in the towel has an entirely different meaning in this extraordinary lot from the legendary coach Chuck Daly who earned dual induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame by virtue of his legendary NBA coaching career and his masterful handling of the Dream Team during its record-setting exploits at the 1992 Olympics. These artifacts marshal their historic oomph from the latter with an amazing T-shirt and white towel each with the blazing black Sharpie autographs from Daly and his legendary charges. Twenty years after suffering an agonizing defeat at the hands of ostensibly Russian amateurs at the 1972 Games in Munich the United States got its revenge and then some sending the first American team to involve NBA players off to Barcelona that summer where they would stomp opponents by an average of nearly 44 points per game en route to the gold medal. Everybody on that squad would be inducted as a group into the Hall of Fame in 2010 but remarkably 11 of the 12 also wound up in Springfield Mass. on their own with only the sole collegiate roster spot Christian Laettner of Duke not earning an individual nod. The lineup was so packed it almost seems silly in hindsight: Michael Jordan Larry Bird Magic Johnson Charles Barkley Karl Malone David Robinson Clyde Drexler John Stockton Chris Mullin Scottie Pippen and Patrick Ewing but its legitimate glitter at the time challenged the hyperbolic abilities of sportswriters and broadcasters from across the land and beyond. Best to settle on perhaps The greatest collection of basketball talent on the planet but even that seems timid with universe arguably a better choice of parameters. This matching towel and T-shirt bear the signatures from that historic group with the Salem Sportswear (Made in the USA hooray!) boasting an XL size tag on the collar and the autographs around and across the USA Basketball red white and blue screen-printed logo on the front of the shirt. The 44-by-24-inch blazing white towel has the same screen-printed USA Basketball logo on each end with the signatures appearing in a similar fashion on the lower end of the towel. All elements of the pair appear to be largely as-issued and problem-free.
Includes copy of LOA from Terry Daly Chuck's widow. Also comes with Letter of Provenance from Rich Behar owner of SportsCard Central who acquired many items directly from the Daly estate in 2010.
