As a former officer with the American Expeditionary Force Christy Mathewson was eligible for membership in the American Legion. Matty remained a member of this veteran’s organization until his untimely death in 1925 brought on by his exposure to poison gas in the war. This is Mathewson’s personal set of American Legion tie and lapel pins. The tiepin has “US” on a star at the center surrounded by “AMERICAN LEGION” in gold on blue enamel. The pin has its original fastener and is in good condition with light wear from age and use. The lapel pin is of 10K gold and has the same design as the tiepin just in a larger size. The pin fastener has “GOLD PLATE” stamped into it while the pin has been stamped with “DEC. 8 1919 10K.” The lapel pin shows medium wear with some surface abrasions and toning from age. A unique set of pieces that pay tribute to Mathewson’s sacrifice in World War I.
