Love or loath Christian Laettner, there's no denying that his college basketball career at Duke University from 1988 to 1992 is widely considered the most decorated in NCAA history. He was the standout player for the Duke Blue Devils when they attained back-to-back National Championships in 1991 and 1992, and was recognized as the NCAA Player of the Year as a senior. During the NCAA Tournament, Laettner demonstrated the innate ability to deliver under pressure when the stakes were highest -- first in the 1990 Regional Final (Elite Eight) against UCONN; and more famously in the 1992 East Regional Final against Kentucky when he hit “The Shot”. In both contests, Duke was trailing by a single point with just two seconds left in overtime when Laettner made the game-winning jumper at the buzzer. His performance in the 1991 Final Four against UNLV was equally notable, when he hit the decisive free throws to dethrone the previously undefeated and heavily favored Runnin' Rebels, thereby avenging Duke's loss in the 1990 National Championship. Laettner then led Duke to the program's first ever NCAA titles by defeating Kansas in the '91 Final, earning the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award in the process.
Laettner's success didn't stop there. He was the only college player chosen for the 1992 U.S. Men's Olympic basketball team, famously known as the "Dream Team", which dominated at the 1992 Summer Olympics. As a result of his participation with the "Dream Team", Laettner's legacy is enshrined in the College Basketball Hall of Fame, the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, and FIBA Hall of Fame. He also received a Naismith Hall of Fame ring (Lot 515) for being a member of the '92 Dream Team. After college, Laettner was the third overall pick in the NBA draft and played 13 solid seasons during which he made the All-Star team.
Featured here is the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame induction medal presented to Christian Laettner. This gold medal, measuring 3.5 inches in diameter, hangs from a red ribbon. It is inscribed with "National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame" at the top and has a high relief image of a coach instructing a player on the front. The back of the medal is etched with "Christian Laettner / 2010 Inductee / Duke". This medal is housed in its original NCB Hall of Fame presentation box, an octagonal case measuring 4" x 5.5" across its widest points. The item also comes with a letter signed by Laettner himself.
