In 1946, the Oakland Oaks (or Acorns as they were also called) hired Charles "Casey" Stengel, the former manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves of the National League as their manager. He responded with second and fourth place finishes before the club won its much celebrated championship in 1948.
The 1948 Oaks were nicknamed the "Nine Old Men" in that many star players were older MLB veterans, including Ernie Lombardi, Cookie Lavagetto, Nick Etten, and George Metkovich. There were younger players on the team as well, including rookie second baseman Alfred "Billy" Martin. Casey propelled himself back to the majors as manager of the Yankees by guiding Oakland to their first Pacific Coast League title in 21 years. It was in Oakland that Stengel developed his talent for "platooning" -- juggling his lineup to maximize each player's potential in given situations -- that served him so famously as manager of the Yankees.
Presented here is manager Casey Stengel's beautiful 14-karat gold ring from that memorable 1948 PCL championship campaign. The face has "1948 Oakland Acorns" in raised lettering surrounded by "Pacific Coast League Champions" in gold-on-green enamel. Crossed bats with an acorn/oak leaf design decorate both shanks. "STENGEL" is engraved inside the band along with the "14K" hallmark. The ring comes in size 11 and weighs 25 gram. It remains in terrific condition for its age. Originally purchased with a letter from Stengel himself, this is the one and only ring issued to the Hall of Fame skipper. Wonderful piece of PCL history!
