Walter Payton is remembered as one of the most prolific running backs in history but his impact in Chicago and on the NFL goes far beyond a compilation of rushing statistics or records. A 9-time Pro Bowler he once held the NFL record for most career rushing yards touchdowns carries yards from scrimmage all-purpose yards and several other categories. “Sweetness” was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and is considered by many to be the greatest “football” player ever. But it was his kind heart and charitable work off the field that made him even more beloved.

This magnificent home jersey was worn by the Bears legend in 1977 his third NFL season when Payton firmly established himself as the league's premier rusher by topping all backs with 1852 yards 14 touchdowns and 5.5 yards per carry. On Nov. 20 he broke the single-game rushing record with 275 yards which has never been broken. Payton helped the Bears turn the corner as a team that year leading them to a 9-5 record and an NFC Wild Card playoff berth. For his efforts he swept just about every major NFL award in ‘77 from league MVP and Offensive Player of the Year to Man of the Year for his charity work. The latter award would soon adopt his name and is still known as the Walter Payton Man of the Year.

On the left front tail is the Wilson manufacturer's tag with size 44. The player number "34" has been screened onto the front back and both sleeves. On the back of the dark navy blue mesh garment is a navy nameplate with the player name "PAYTON" screened on. All of the letters and numbers are white with an orange outline. The tagging numbers and letters (size placement pattern and material) are consistent with other 1977 Chicago Bears game-used jerseys. Game wear is evident on this Payton shirt with soiling/sweating around the neck and upper back plus a few contact marks (front left shoulder) and light paint transfers (front right tail). On the front numbers Payton has signed and inscribed the front numbers with “Chicago Bears” on the ‘3’ and “Sweetness Walter Payton” on the ‘4’ in near perfect black marker that we would rate a 9.5/10. According to its precious seller the jersey was originally obtained by a gentleman who made a contribution to the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund.
